Beeper and firebirdluver finished Beeper's first chapter book this week! This is a milestone I have been looking forward to since Beeper was a baby, because I have many fond memories of the books my mom used to read to us, and because I have always enjoyed reading to firebirdliver in the car on roadtrips and look forward to doing that as a family. I have tried a couple of times in the past to read chapter books with him when I thought he was interested, but we never got more than a few chapters into them before he lost interest (I am not counting books like "Take Me to the Moon" because, even though it does have chapters, you can still read it in one sitting). The one I tried most recently was Charlotte's Web, because he loves the movie, and it is at the top of most of the lists of recommended first chapter books. Even that didn't hold his interest for more than a couple of readings, though.
A couple of months ago, firebirdluver had the idea to try reading this to Beeper:
It immediately became Beeper's favorite thing. He looked forward to reading "Bone" every night. If you are not familiar with it, Bone was a comic book series by Jeff Smith, an ongoing story that lasted several years. Now that the story is finished, you can buy it in smaller graphic novels (I have seen these at book fairs) or get the whole story in this one volume novel.
Not surprisingly, this is not something I have seen on a single list of recommended first chapter books, but it makes sense. It has eased him into the idea of following a long story over the course of several nights with plenty of pictures to help him follow the story. I think following the pictures has also helped reinforce the "left to right" of reading, because he has shown major improvement in that area recently.
