What's with the hair?

Several months ago, someone lectured me about "allowing" firebirdluver to grow his hippie 'do.

"Appearances are so important."

"It doesn't matter to me."

"Well you are an exception. Most people care. It's important for him to make a good impression at work."

"Have you seen his boss?"

It's true. Firebirdluver has a boss with a ponytail that is much longer. (It's also gray and not curly.) Fortunately, he works in an industry where appearances are not all that important most of the time.

However, that hasn't stopped friends and family from bluntly giving their opinions on his latest look. Strangers, fortunately don't voice their opinions beyond a disapproving look.

I hope he doesn't mind, but I'm going to let you all in on a secret. He hates having his hair long. He can't wait to shave it all off.

So what's up with the long hair? He is aware that his fantastic curls are the envy of others. He's decided he wants to donate them to Locks of Love before he gets too much gray. It shouldn't be too many more months before it's long enough.

Yes, appearances can be deceiving.

To read more spins on the topic of "appearances" head over to Sprite's Keeper. Or write your own and give her the link by Friday.

Hate is a pretty strong word. I'd say it's more of a strong inconvenience to have long hair. For example, when I was working underneath my truck and my hair kept getting caught in the wheels of the creeper, that was inconvenient. Also, when I'm a dressed up in my work personal protective equipment (hard hat, respirator, safety glasses, hearing protection, etc) then having long hair can be inconvenient. It's true though, that I am looking forward to when I can get it cut. I hope someone is able to enjoy my long hair more than I do.

Long hair does get stuck in a lot of places. If I had a nickle for every time I got my hair stuck in the car door, or Amir has laid on it, or an other number of things, I would be very rich.
I think that what you're doing is great! Not that you need tons of support for growing hair, I wish you luck and stick with it!

Inconvenient but for a good cause!
If only those naysayers knew what they were tsking over. Good for Firebirdluver! You're linked!

I love this post, because it really shows that when we judge others' by their appearances, we are probably going to be wrong.

And why is it that people tell the wife or girlfriend when they disapprove of the man's looks? When I was dating my husband, a girl at church came up to me and told me I should comb my boyfriend's hair. Why is it my responsibility? Shouldn't he get to look however he wants? Why do these sorts of things tend to bother some people so much?

I wish I could get Merlyn to grow his hair long enough to put in a ponytail. I'm sure he'd be able to donate in ~8-12 months time. I've donated a couple of times or so. My record so far has been 21.5" tip to tip. My first donation was 13.5" tip to tip. I can't remember if I've donated any other times.

I can't wait to see your hair. ; ) I know the main young male character in "Stardust" that becomes king has nice hair after Captain Shakespeare gets it to curl and grow shoulder length.

I used to think that being someone who has infrequent contact with customers means that I do not have to worry too much about appearances. I realized that if I dress too casual, that my work becomes causal as well.

The odd thing is that I strive to get to know the "inner" person rather than basing my actions on their appearance. I just hope that my inner person is heard if others base their opinions of someone on what they look like.

Great Spin,

What a cool thing he's doing for such a great cause. Looks certainly can be deceiving, can't they?

I think that is admirable. I have done that 3 or 4 times. The last time I was growing it before donating it last summer, my sister kept telling me I was too old to wear my hair long.

FYI - they don't care if it's gray, it just can't be colored. I have a wide Cruella DeVille streak and they said THEY can separate the gray strands or color it.
