Dolls

Handkerchief dolls have a history going at least as far back as American frontier days. It is said mothers would fold their handkerchiefs into dolls to entertain their children during church services. Even now, being able to fold a handkerchief kept in a pocket or purse can be a useful way to divert a small child during church, while waiting for the doctor or other times when a little distraction is needed.

I have designed some Spoonflower fabric with handkerchief dolls in mind. One yard of this print on a 42” wide fabric will give you six 14” handkerchiefs. One yard of this print on a 54” fabric will give you six 18” handkerchiefs.

Cut handkerchiefs and finish edges using an anti-fray liquid, roll hem, zig-zag or serge. Handkerchiefs can be folded into dolls using the following instructions. Some children may enjoy folding and unfolding the dolls themselves, while others may enjoy watching you fold them, then playing with the dolls themselves.
